The Penang War Museum is a privately-run museum located on the hills above the fishing village of Batu Maung. Originally a British fort built in the 1930’s, the complex was taken over by the Japanese in 1942 and used as a prisoner of war camp. It is the largest war museum in South East Asia, housed in a 19.36 acre military fortress with a 320-degree view of the sea. The museum includes a cannon-firing bay, anti-aircraft firing pits, sleeping quarters for soldiers, cookhouse, lockup, and a command centre. It features exhibits, replicas, and testimonies, focusing on the history of the fort, the British presence, and the atrocities of the Japanese POW camp. The museum opens daily from 9am to 6pm.Category
